You all are too nice to me.

I was all set for controversy too...I kept waiting and waiting for someone to come and argue with me about some of these points. I usually get hate mail when I say some of these things. My haters must be on vacation this week.

Awesome post! These are all terrific points, but #6 is probably the single best piece of advice anyone can hear -- not just from a career POV, but as a universal principle.

Thoughtful people from Heraclitus to John Lennon ("Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans") have emphasized that the essence of life is change, whether it's growth, entropy or series of random accidents. I've found that surfing is a great metaphor for staying flexible, attentive and open to the full range of possibilities on offer -- and here's a blog post that spells out how: http://kentropic.wordpress.com/2009/07/01/kinaole-rolling-with-the-changes/

And point #7 should be required reading and discussion fodder once a year, every year, for everyone between the ages of 17 and 30. If more people shared the fundamental, practical grasp of what "debt" really means -- which you outline so eloquently here -- our economy probably wouldn't be such a gooey mess right now.

Well done, and thanks!

I love this list, Kerry! It's totally from the perspective of sound business advice - whether you work in HR or elsewhere. And I think I spent my first 10 work years getting sucked into ALL the drama...big career (and life) mistake. The drama goes on whether you're part of it or not. And there's so much free time to work on other stuff (like building a career you actually love) when you stay clear of the madness - as much as possible, of course. Oh...I hope you don't think I'm heading into the HR fray. Nope. I just want to stay on the sidelines and help folks stay sane while they deal with the madness. Basically now I can just send them to your list!

Kerry, my career in HR his an expansive six months (former commercial real estate agent here) but by god, you just nailed that list! As if you wrote this just for me! Great post.

And I do (unfortunately) have to get rid of folks for things you wouldn't imagine. I realized quickly that there is no way I can save these folks from themselves.

Great list, Kerry. I absolutely agree with #3, as an engineer who works in HR. I hide behind the technology stuff a lot. And as a result I think I serve my clients better.
#1 is the key. You could set out with an idea to create a great work place, but people will be who they are, and they may not want the responsibility of being part of a great work place.
Overall, I read your list to say "Be Flexible. Be true to yourself. Don't take anything too seriously."
Thanks for sharing it.
