I have had recruiters flat out tell me 'If you don't hear from me by X day, give me a call.' this invariably leads to being told they have heard nothing yet, or endless rounds of phone tag. I now just consider it a polite blow-off like an 'I'll call you' at the end of a date.

I love the last one: You’re applying for a job where being obnoxious is a plus.

Amen to the "Do-Not-Call" Rule. Unless you're applying to be a used car salesman or some other "aggressive" position, you usually come across as pushy or worse - desperate. I know it's tough times out there, but your phone call is going to annoy a hiring manager who probably doesn't have enough time in her day to deal with needy job applicants. After all, that's probably why the company is hiring... there's too much work to be done!

You may want to be proactive and carry your own frozen dead animals just in case. Not sure what your state's carrying laws though, but I do not foresee any legal ramifications.

Oh, and yes, you are right on about the call back rule. Unless you get the explicit invite to call back, it is just not a good idea. Email is a mch safer medium (as long as you have a basic command of the English language and know how to use the spell checker).

It's true. Although I wrote that disclaimer in February, when this post originally appeared, it's just as relevant today.

Maybe I should add it to the header---"Welcome to Clue Wagon. Please do not hit the author with a frozen dead animal." Probably some SEO expert would tell me that I could pull in the lucrative unemployed-and-quirkily-violent market that way.

I'm glad you clarified about the frozen chicken, because I'm not confident everyone would be clear on that point.
